Redesign dating apps to lessen racial bias, study recommends September 28, by Melanie Lefkowitz, Cornell University Credit: Brand Communications Mobile dating apps that allow users to filter their searches by race — or rely on algorithms that pair up people of the same race — reinforce racial divisions and biases, according to a new paper by Cornell researchers.
As more and more relationships begin online, dating and hookup apps should discourage discrimination by offering users categories other than race and ethnicity to describe themselves, posting inclusive community messages, and writing algorithms that don’t discriminate, the authors said. Although partner preferences are extremely personal, the authors argue that culture shapes our preferences, and dating apps influence our decisions.
More people are using these apps, and they’re critical infrastructures that don’t get a lot of attention when it comes to bias and discrimination,” said Hutson, now a student at the University of Washington School of Law. Tinder and Grindr have tens of millions of users, and Tinder says it has facilitated 20 billion connections since its launch. Research shows racial inequities in online dating are widespread. For example, black men and women are 10 times more likely to message whites than white people are to message black people.
Letting users search, sort and filter potential partners by race not only allows people to easily act on discriminatory preferences, it stops them from connecting with partners they may not have realized they’d like. Apps may also create biases. The paper cites research showing that men who used the platforms heavily viewed multiculturalism less favorably, and sexual racism as more acceptable. Users who get messages from people of other races are more likely to engage in interracial exchanges than they would have otherwise.
This suggests that designing platforms to make it easier for people of different races to meet could overcome biases, the authors said.

Nov 27, · Humans and great apes differ in chromosome numbers—humans have 46 while apes have The difference is claimed to be due to the “end-to-end fusion” of two small, ape-like chromosomes in a human-ape ancestor that joined in the distant past and formed human chromosome 2.
At the time that Darwin’s On the Origin of Species was published, the earth was “scientifically” determined to be million years old. By , it was found to be 1. In , science firmly established that the earth was 3. Finally in , it was discovered that the earth is “really” 4. In these early studies the order of sedimentary rocks and structures were used to date geologic time periods and events in a relative way. At first, the use of “key” diagnostic fossils was used to compare different areas of the geologic column.
Although there were attempts to make relative age estimates, no direct dating method was available until the twentieth century.

Although the exact values for the luminosity, radius, mass parameter, and mass may vary slightly in the future due to observational uncertainties, the IAU nominal constants will remain the same SI values as they remain useful measures for quoting stellar parameters. Large lengths, such as the radius of a giant star or the semi-major axis of a binary star system, are often expressed in terms of the astronomical unit — approximately equal to the mean distance between the Earth and the Sun million km or approximately 93 million miles.
In , the IAU defined the astronomical constant to be an exact length in meters: Stellar evolution Stars condense from regions of space of higher matter density, yet those regions are less dense than within a vacuum chamber. These regions — known as molecular clouds — consist mostly of hydrogen, with about 23 to 28 percent helium and a few percent heavier elements.
One example of such a star-forming region is the Orion Nebula.

Some are moneymakers for doctors and hospitals; others are expedient and still others seem to work, at least in the short term. But evidence shows that all have questionable long-term outcomes for treating certain conditions, and some may even cause harm. If a patient is having a heart attack, a stent can be a lifesaver.
But for heart disease patients with stable angina — chest pain brought on by exertion or stress — a stent is not better at preventing a heart attack or prolonging survival than lifestyle changes. Do you adhere to a strict diet, exercise or take medications to manage your cholesterol? The procedure is often used to treat back pain from spinal stenosis, which occurs when the soft tissues between the vertebrae flatten out, creating pressure on the spinal cord or nerves that go to the back, arms, neck, shoulders and legs.
The act or process of splitting into parts. The amitotic division of a cell or its nucleus. An asexual process of reproduction in which a unicellular organism divides into two or more independently maturing daughter cells. A nuclear reaction in which an atomic nucleus, especially a heavy nucleus such as an isotope of uranium, splits into fragments, usually two of comparable mass, with the evolution of from million to several hundred million electron volts of energy.
Published by Houghton Mifflin Company. Fission occurs spontaneously, generally when a nucleus has an excess of neutrons, resulting in the inability of the strong force to bind the protons and neutrons together. The fission reaction used in many nuclear reactors and bombs involves the absorption of neutrons by uranium nuclei, which immediately undergo fission, releasing energy and fast neutrons. A process of asexual reproduction in which a single cell splits to form two identical, independent cells.
In fission, the chromosomal DNA replicates before the cell divides. Most bacteria and other prokaryotes reproduce by means of fission.

Kevin West, a regular at Pulse nightclub, said Omar Mateen messaged him on and off for a year before the shooting using the gay chat and dating app Jack’d. GoPro is far from dead and still innovating with its cameras. The action camera — CEO Nick Woodman prefers “lifestyle” instead — company released a trio of solid products last year Hero5 Black, Hero5 session , and Karma drone with the sole goal of rejuvenating the brand and doubling down on its new mission to make video editing effortless for everyone. At this year’s Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado, GoPro gave a very select group of media a first look at its next game-changing product: The best thing about the new GoPros isn’t the cameras — it’s the software GoPro’s been talking about the vast potential of degree cameras for years.
In , Woodman told me: We’re making spherical cameras. First teased in April, the Fusion is the company’s first consumer degree camera. Though I was able to touch the Fusion, GoPro is still withholding many key details for a later date. My guess is the Fusion will cost more than those two since it shoots higher resolution spherical videos.
Like the Omni, GoPro says the degree videos captured by the Fusion’s two spherical lenses are the equivalent of six GoPros cameras. No details on the field of view, but they’re most likely fisheye. This is the future of GoPro.
