Drought situation with several warm ups have kept the snow totals low. There are several good factors about this. One is there is a very good chance we can start fishing on April 1st. Some years there is too much ice for us to get in the marina. But more importantly a less harsh winter bodes well for the newly hatched or stocked fish in the lake. A wet spring is also important. This winter is by no means over but by mid February the worst of the ice building will be past us and things are looking good for not too much greater ice build up.

Northwest What was once slated to be a controversial subdivision is now a unique island preserve thanks to the Little Traverse Conservancy. Oden Island, located south of the village of Oden, juts out into Crooked Lake and is the home to large old-growth trees and fragile wetlands. When a developer proposed crowding 34 homes on the east half of the island, the Conservancy orchestrated a response in that included an outpouring of support and donations from communities and families to protect the natural side of the island.
Today the acre preserve offers a parking area, nearly a mile of foot trails Heartland Tucked away on the east side of Alden, oblivious to most visitors who are mesmerized by Torch Lake to the west of town, is a small mountain with a short but interesting trail system. Coy Mountain Natural Area dates back to when Reuben Coy decided to preserve a ridge forested in virgin hardwoods that towered behind his gristmill.
I have enjoyed the wilderness of Northern Michigan my entire life. With a home made sling shot, hook & line on a stick, and of course a 2 bladed jack knife, I camped .

Fishing Whitefish and Herring Although they have always been an important component to Great Lakes commercial fisheries, Lake Whitefish are becoming increasingly popular with recreational anglers in both the Great Lakes and inland waters. Whitefish make excellent table fare and put on a credible tussle on hook and line with a fight with that resembles a rodeo bronco. Often associated with deep water, where they are targeted on or near bottom with spawn, minnows, wigglers, swimming jigs or spoons both during open water and through the ice, whitefish move up onto shoals or into rivers to spawn.
They provide a popular pier fishery in some locations for anglers using spawn or wax worms. Fly fishermen can take them in flowing water with nymphs and on the surface during heavy fly hatches. Because of its papery mouth, however, many anglers lose whitefish before they can bring them to the net. Inland whitefish are most commonly associated with deep, clear-water lakes.
Generally, those lakes with lake trout populations will also support whitefish.

False start Posted by Sean It’s been a full week since last I posted here, which was not my intent. In fact I should have been typing this Friday, when we had hoped to be under way to Jacksonville, but we had a bit of a false start which I will detail later in the post. Last Sunday afternoon we arrived in Oriental, NC to a predictably crowded anchorage. The free docks were totally occupied. With light winds forecast from the north for the night, we eased up between two sailboats and dropped the hook in the harbor map , setting a very short scope.
After we got settled we called our friends Gayle and Bill on Spiraserpula, who were docked in a marina one creek over. Vector at anchor in Oriental harbor. That’s Flux, our new dink, at the dock. Lots of businesses in Oriental are still closed from the storms, including most of the restaurants in the harbor area.

Who dat think they gonna beat them Tigers? No one has, so far, as Benton Harbor is Benton Harbor Class B: What distinguishes Benton Harbor is the unselfishness and passing ability up and down the lineup; and the superstar, sophomore Carlos Johnson, is a dog with no prima donna leanings. Detroit Cass Tech A: The defending PSL champion has no superstars or true big man though senior Randy Gilbert, a Ferris State signee has elevated his game closer to realizing his underclassman potential , but has a plethora of future college players and size throughout the roster.
Hazel Park A: It may get tougher in the non-exhibition season as familiarity and scouting tend to make it, against the likes of Clarkston and Troy in the OAA-Red. Ann Arbor Skyline A: Prior to the loss the Wolves had beaten two strong teams, Wayne Memorial and Carman-Ainsworth, by a less than comfortable 15 points combined. That said, this is still as talented as any team in the state, even without its depth fully utilized. East Lansing A: Michigan signee Brandon Johns made his Mr.
Basketball bid with a point performance and is the type of talent that can carry a team.

The last couple days have been pretty bitter cold and would have been tough fishing. Forecast is for warmer near end of the week and weekend. Currently water levels have come down the last couple days due to the operations at Foote Dam and the cold weather. So many nice deep slow runs and sand holes in lower Au Sable River that are just ideal for holding steelhead this time of year.
Currently there are some very nice Steelhead and Atlantic Salmon in the river. Most of the Atlantics are done spawning now and should stay in river for a while and feed. Look to the structure for Atlantics — around logs and they love shallow water. These fish can be very aggressive and fishing them with streamers has been effective. The bite window can really turn off and on during the course of a day!
At times you can sight fish them and they will just pounce on a streamer with one cast but also many will just chase to the boat! Steelhead numbers continue to increase and there are some nice adult ones in the river now. Either swung streamers or egg patterns are what is producing for them right now.
